Dining Table, Gidan Deribe, Maiduguri

Mai Deribe used to be one of the richest men in town and I was lucky enough to visit his house - honestly, in many regards it is out of Maiduguri and has little in common with the life that seems to go in outside the gates of his compound, the imported furniture certainly contributed to that impression ... but nice it was, this table

can you show us more pics from mai deribes house. i heard its outrageous.

@thomas: I can, I have already uploaded a set up art pics from Kano for the following week but I'll follow that up with some more pics from Gidan Deribe - I actually think its outrageous as well, even more so since it has not been maintained particularly well since his death ... maybe some pics from Maiduguri before last week's havoc are in place anyway, just hoping everybody I know there is alright - I don't seem to get through to Nigeria from here in Germany where I spend the summer and obviously answering emails has not been at anybody's mind yet ... hope you're not there currently ...

I love money, but, I don't like insolent luxury.. I like to live comfortably like I do right now.. but, I would not truly wish to live in this type of mansion. Though I do have a beautiful home in Luxembourg. True we only live once but, what is all this??we will live it here when we die..

I can tell you categorically that what you saw was the tip of the ice berg. There are more awesome stuffs in his house that will make aso rock shiver in jealousy. I have been there, but all i can say is that you have to be there to understand which word to qualify the beauty. MEN!!!

Awesome! I only wish such places will not be wasted but put to full use.... If not the reason and aim for its existence is defeated.

@Usman, you shouldn't have make such a comment. Is it not true? I once taught a grandchild in Mai Deribe's House in Maiduguri. I Worked with Ruby Model School then. I must confess, that place was a master piece. The same house that was built with gold has been deserted long ago. No one can stay there even Zanna his son can't. I was told spirits disturb them. I won't say this is real but what am trying to say is that where is he now. Vanity. That building got into the world Guinness Book Of Record as worlds most wasteful investment. Right in front of His gate, people suffer a lot from abject poverty. Even till date. People surrounding his estate are too poor. What is the economic relief given to this people. My friends, money is good but this? Is VANITY.
